Hurricanes Firmly On NCAA's Bubble
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Fresh off an upset victory over the Duke Blue Devils, the University of Miami basketball team is thinking big, as in the NCAA Tournament.
For a team like Miami to make the tournament, it first has to have a signature win in its resume.
Last weekend's upset of Duke, at the Blue Devils, certainly qualifies and it put Miami back on the basketball map nationally.
Miami has racked up a 14-7 record on the season, with a 5-3 record in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
That's good, but it's still likely not good enough to guarantee the Canes a spot in the big dance.
The Hurricanes have two games against Florida State, and home games against North Carolina, Wake Forest, and Boston College still on the schedule.
If the Canes can get to 18-20 victories on the season, it might be enough to earn a 9-10 seed in the NCAA tournament.
The Canes start on Thursday with a game against Virginia Tech in ACC action. Va. Tech is just 2-6 in conference play and should be easy pickings for the Canes.
Wake Forest and Boston College should also be relatively easy victories for the Canes.
Assuming those victories come, the Canes would have 17 victories and likely need to pull out one or two victories from games including a home-and-home with Florida State, North Carolina at home, and Maryland and North Carolina State on the road.
Plus, if the Canes can win one or two ACC tournament games, the big dance is a strong likelihood for the Hurricanes.
