Hurricanes Fall To Tar Heels 18-14
(CBSSports) — Miami quarterback Stephen Morris suffered an apparent ankle injury in the fourth quarter of the Hurricanes' 18-14 loss to North Carolina.
Memphis transfer Ryan Williams, a Miami native, entered the game and gave the Hurricanes a chance to win. He completed 9 of 13 passes for 80 yards, taking advantage of a conservative North Carolina secondary in the game's final minutes.
Morris completed just 12 of 26 passes for 155 yards before suffering the injury, throwing two interceptions in a game that featured sloppy play on both sides of the ball. North Carolina committed 15 accepted penalties that cost it more than 140 yards, making the Hurricanes' seven flags look innocent. Both teams converted only 6 of 15 third downs, and neither team scored once in the fourth quarter.
The Hurricanes suffered their first ACC loss because of the play North Carolina got from running back Giovani Bernard. Bernard has been the most consistent producer in Larry Fedora's offensive attack, and he burned Miami for 238 all-purpose yards and both of the Tar Heels' touchdowns. The sophomore added 176 yards to his season rushing total, bringing his per game average above 130 yards. North Carolina is now 5-0 with Gio in the lineup, 0-2 without him.
