Hurricanes Baseball Team Eliminated From Postseason In Loss To Texas Tech

CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami) – The Miami Hurricanes fought hard throughout a rain-soaked weekend to force a deciding seventh game against second-seeded Texas Tech but that was as far as the Canes would get, dropping the Coral Gables Regional Championship Game 4-0 on Monday night.

In order to force the seventh game, Miami played an elimination game on Sunday at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field that would be delayed twice by rain before finally being postponed after seven innings had been completed.  The game resumed on Monday afternoon with the Hurricanes trailing 1-0 in the top of the eighth inning.

Miami tied the game right away and forced extra innings, eventually topping the Red Raiders 2-1 in ten innings.  That led to the winner-take-all series finale which began about an hour later.

Unfortunately for the Hurricanes it seemed that they had little left in the tank, mustering only three hits in what would be the final game of their season.  Miami freshman Derik Beauprez started the game and pitched well, going four innings and giving up just one hit and two walks while striking out two.  It was only the fourth start of his collegiate career.

The Canes were kept at bay all evening thanks to Texas Tech lefty Cameron Smith.  Smith pitched a complete game for the Red Raiders, surrendering just three hits and walking five batters to go with three strikeouts.

The game was a scoreless tie through six innings before Texas Tech finally broke through in the seventh, scoring a run off an error by Canes catcher Garrett Kennedy and then another on a sacrifice fly by Red Raiders pinch hitter Alex Humphreys. The visitors scored two more runs in the eighth inning thanks to an RBI single by outfielder Zach Davis.
