Gert Weakening As It Races Over Colder Water

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Hurricane Gert is losing its oomph it races over colder waters.
At 11 a.m., the center of the system was 285 miles south-southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland.
Gert was moving to the east-northeast at 40 mph with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph with higher gusts.
Additional weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours and Gert is forecast to become a post-tropical cyclone later today.
Swells generated by Gert will continue to affect the coast of the northeastern United States and Atlantic Canada through tonight. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
