Hurricane Experts Meet In Colorado To Discuss 2014 Season
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- In the snowy mountains of Breckenridge, Colorado, meteorologists from all over the country are meeting to discuss the 2014 hurricane season.
The list of weather experts includes South Florida's own Dr. Richard Knabb from the National Hurricane Center.
"So the role of the media and interacting with us from the National Weather Service/Hurricane Center and that interaction has to happen on a frequent basis. This is a really good event to do that," said Dr. Knabb.
Even though the meeting takes place outside of hurricane season, meteorologists and experts start thinking about lessons learned from the previous yea.
"So there's a lot of really good information exchange which is very valuable to do, from the hurricane perspective, when it's the off season," said Dr. Knabb.
Knabb also hopes newcomers to South Florida will educate themselves about the necessities of hurricane season now rather than waiting until the season arrives.
"Some people have moved here a new, never dealt with a hurricane problem before, don't know their vulnerabilities, don't know their risk, don't know if their home can take a certain level of wind, don't know if they live in an evacuation zone, that worries me the most."
