Hurricane Cristobal Expected To Become Extratropical
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Hurricane Cristobal is racing northeastward Friday as forecasters expect the system to become extratropical.
At 5:00 a.m., the Category 1 hurricane was 325 miles South-southeast of Cape Race Newfoundland. Its maximum sustained winds were estimated at 80 mph as the system moved toward the northeast near 49 mph.
This general motion with some decrease in forward speed is expected during the next day or two.
Cristobal is forecast to lose its tropical characteristics later on Friday but it should remain a powerful extratropical cyclone over the north Atlantic through Sunday.
Surf swells generated by Cristobal are affecting Bermuda and the New England coast. Large swells will also affect portions of the southern coast of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland during the next day or so.
The swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
