Hundreds Of Students With Autism Celebrate Prom

CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami) – It was a special day for Miami-Dade Public High School students with autism.
They were dressed up in their finest as their 2015 prom got underway at the University Of Miami's student activities center ballroom in Coral Gables.
Beaming from ear to ear, you knew the kids were about to have the time of their life!
"It's great because they announce the king and queen -- all the excitement, music," said American Senior High student Demetrius Sesler.

"It's a good way for them to get together, feel comfortable. They understand each other. They don't judge each other," said event creator Natalie Sanz.
Five hundred high school students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) dressed up in their finest duds.
"I love the whole thing . I live the music, the carpet, everything. excitement, music," said South Miami Senior High student Rosa Perez.
"They get to meet kids from all over Dade County from the south to the North," said American Senior High teacher Michele Roberts.
Depending on who CBS4's Walter Makaula spoke with, each had a different favorite part they were most excited about experiencing.
This year's prom had a Hollywood theme.
"We're just having fun. We're so excited to see the kids and we 'win character doing our jobs," said volunteer Eric Quinn.
"I'm dressed as a candy girl and I'm here to welcome everyone to their prom and let them have fun and just excite them so they can have a great time," said volunteer Zhane Fortune.
Although the kids are excited to be here, the staff and volunteers said they're looking forward to doing it all over again next year.
