Jobseekers Flock To Davie Job Fair
DAVIE (CBS4) - Hundreds of people desperately trying to get back into the workforce attended a major job fair Thursday in Davie.
The Job News USA event was held at the Signature Grand on State Road 84.
Companies that were accepting resumes and actively searching new new employees to fill their ranks included the Broward Sheriff's Office, Cellular Sales, Colonial Life, Interactive Response Technologies, New York Life, Norwegian Cruise Line, Northwester Mutual, The Continental Group, The Paradise Shops and Waste Management.
The nationwide jobs picture took an unexpected turn this week. According to the numbers more people applied for unemployment benefits last week, the first increase in three weeks. Economists expected claims to fall.
Still, the broader trend points to a slowly healing jobs market.
The government says applications for unemployment benefits rose 27,000 to a seasonally adjusted 412,000 for the week ended April 9. That left applications at their highest point since mid-February.
Applications near 375,000 are consistent with a sustained increase in hiring. Applications peaked during the recession at 659,000.
The four-week average of applications, a less volatile measure, rose to 395,750. Applications have dropped by about 6 percent over the past two months.
