Hundreds Fed Christmas Dinner At Local Mission
MIAMI (CBS4) -- The Miami Rescue Mission and Broward Outreach Centers held their biggest Christmas Celebration ever for the Homeless and Needy of South Florida, feeding more than 2 thousand people.
They opened their doors to hundreds Friday in both Broward and Miami-Dade Counties offering food and gifts to those who could not afford to celebrate on their own.
More than 90 volunteers from Aramark, the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and individual volunteers started the day by providing coffee, fruit and pastries. At 11 AM a Christmas dinner was served.
Richard Ross, member of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, said of the event, "You have a good feeling when helping those who are less fortunate, particularly during the holidays." Ross continued, "You get more out of coming here than you put into it. It's a great, great feeling when you walk out. I can't explain it in words. You have to experience it, to really see what you mean on everyone here when you volunteer."
Aramark, State Farm, Toy Town and other community organizations also have helped supply and collect toys for the needy children of Miami.
Friday's event entertained people with music the Regeneration Singers (a group of the formerly homeless) as well as performances from the formerly homeless residents of the Miami Rescue Missions Center for Women & Children.
The Christmas meal was to single people at the Center for Men and families were served directly across the street at the Community Activity Center.
