SUNRISE (CBSMiami) – After splitting a preseason doubleheader on the road against the Nashville Predators, the Florida Panthers returned to Sunrise to play their first home preseason game of the season.
Florida got off to a strong start thanks to recently extended forward Jonathan Huberdeau, who scored the team's first two goals in an eventual 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars at the BB&T Center.
Huberdeau opened the scoring at 13:01 of the first period when he stole a pass from Stars defenseman John Klingberg and slid the puck past goalie Jack Campbell.
Then just 38 seconds into the second period Huberdeau netted his second goal, taking a nice pass from Jaromir Jagr and snapping a wrist shot past Campbell.
Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo played the first two periods, stopping all 15 shots he faced.
Forward Nick Bjugstad gave Florida a 3-0 lead at 10:09 of the third period when he scored a power play goal on assists from Brian Campbell and Jagr, his second of the game.
Bjugstad also received a penalty shot but was stopped by Campbell, who played the entire game for Dallas and stopped 32 of the Panthers 35 shots on goal.
The Stars got third period goals from All-Star Tyler Seguin and Jason Demers, both on Florida goalie Mike McKenna who stopped seven of the nine shots he faced.
The Panthers (2-1-0) will hit the road to face the Tampa Bay Lightning on Friday night from Amalie Arena in Tampa.
The Panthers will face the Philadelphia Flyers in their season opener at the BB&T Center on Saturday, October 10th at 7 p.m. You can hear every game on Sports Radio 560 WQAM, the radio home of the Florida Panthers.
