Homestead Partners With CBS4's Project Broken Window

HOMESTEAD (CBS4) - Homestead residents who see problems in their neighborhoods which could lead to criminal activity attended a special Community Police and Crime Watch Committee town hall meeting Tuesday night to air their concerns.

City officials have also contacted CBS4 to partner with them in their Broken Window initiative.
"Project Broken Window" was named after the theory that urban crime often spreads in neighborhoods and urban environments where broken windows, blight and disrepair are found.

CBS4 is actively seeking to work with local government agencies and police departments in their efforts to prevent crime.  Agencies which have already partnered with the station on this initiative include Miami-Dade Schools Police and the police departments of Wilton Manor, Aventura, Miami, North Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Doral, Miami-Dade, West Miami, North Miami and South Miami.

Homesteads' Community Police and Crime Watch Committee was started last year to be the 'eyes and ears' of the city's police department. Currently there are just under two dozen members on the committee who represent the communities of Oasis, Keys Gate, the Northwest Homestead community, and the Villages. Mayor Steven Bateman said his goal would be to expand the committee to more than 50 members to make sure all areas of the city are covered.

Homestead has also established an anonymous tip line, managed by the committee, where residents can call in their concerns.
