Homestead Brush Fire 75-Percent Contained
HOMESTEAD (CBSMiami) - Florida Forestry Service workers are finally getting a handle on brush fire in Homestead.
As of Thursday, the fire, which has charred 500 acres, was 75 percent contained. The so-called "Turkey West Fire" fire was sparked by a lightning strike in an area north of SW 344 Street and east of SW 117 Ave.
On Wednesday, it forced the closure of land access to Biscayne National Park. Park officials said the fire was burning just outside park boundaries along the park's access road, Canal Drive. Park rangers also closed the Dante Fascell Visitor Center and escorted visitors out of the park.
Thursday morning, the National Park Service determined that the threat had passed and re-opened Canal Drive and the visitor center.
