Holy Cross Hospital Informs Former Patients Of Data Breach
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – Nearly 10,000 former patients of Holy Cross Hospital have received letters in the mail notifying them that their personal information may have been accessed by a former employee.
According to hospital officials, they recently learned that an employee had inappropriately accessed thousands of patient records. The information included patient names, dates of birth, addresses and Social Security Numbers.
As a precaution, the hospital sent out letters to all of the 9,900 patients whose demographic information was accessed (appropriately or potentially inappropriately) by this person from November 2011 and August 2013.
An investigation by the hospital found the employee may have wanted the information to file fraudulent tax returns. They've since been terminated and the hospital wants them to face criminal prosecuted.
All patients affected by this incident have been offered free credit monitoring services.
