MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) – A truck driver from Hollywood is facing charges after his 18-wheeler hit a group of motorcyclists parked alongside an interstate, killing two, in North Carolina, according to authorities.
The N.C. Highway Patrol said Daniel Santiago Serna, 34, is charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and felony hit-and-run following Friday's accident, the News & Record of Greensboro reports. Serna was scheduled to appear in court Monday.
Investigators believe Serna may have fallen asleep at the wheel when his truck drifted onto the shoulder and hit the motorcyclists on Interstate 85 in Greensboro.
The patrol said 37-year-old Arnie M. Morris of Woodbridge, Virginia, was standing on the shoulder and died at the scene. On Sunday, 51-year-old Kenneth N. Jefferson of South Chesterfield, Virginia, died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Four other motorcyclists were injured.
