"Hollywood" Comes To South Florida
POMPANO BEACH (CBS4) – Hollywood movie makers are using their movie magic to bring Hollywood to South Florida, literally.
In preparation for the movie "Rock of Ages", soon to be filmed in South Florida, movie makers have built a replica Hollywood sign on the Monarch Hill Landfill, located right next to the Florida Turnpike at Sample Road.
The replica has 20-foot high letters just like the real one in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles.
Several high school students will also benefit from the sign. Waste Management is donating the location fee to neighboring Monarch High School in Coconut Creek to fund scholarships for four graduating seniors.
"We were pleased to respond to a request from Broward County Film Commissioner Noelle Stevenson to provide access to Monarch Hill landfill to replicate the Hollywood Hills in Broward County," said Dawn McCormick, Community Affairs Manager for Waste Management. "We then wanted to pass on the fee we received to provide college scholarships to four deserving seniors at Monarch High School as part of our ongoing commitment to our local schools."
Actor Tom Cruise stars in the film which takes place in the late '80s and is based on the Broadway musical of the same name. Alec Baldwin plays the owner of a fictional rock club on the Sunset Strip. Julianne Hough stars as an aspiring actress opposite Diego Boneta as her rocker love interest. Director Adam Shankman's star-studded cast also includes Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mary J. Blige, Russell Brand, Bryan Cranston, Paul Giamatti and Malin Akerman.
The musical romance features rock-themed songs of the 80s including tunes by Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison and Whitesnake.
Filming begins later this month in Fort Lauderdale and Miami.
