Hit & Run Teen's Mom Asks Driver To Come Forward

The parents of a University of Miami student critically injured in a hit and run accident would like the driver responsible for hitting their son to come forward.

Paul Jones, 21, of Maryland, lays in a coma with massive head and other injuries.

Coral Gables police said Jones was crossing the intersection of Red and Blue Roads Saturday evening just after 7 p.m. when he was struck by a car whose driver just kept going. Jones was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition. After being notified of the accident, Jones' parents flew to Miami to be with their son.

"Right now the life threatening part of his condition is the head trauma," said Betsy Jones, Paul's mother.

Jones said her son is a great guy and asked for the public's help in finding the driver responsible.

"Please, please, help us.  I want to know what happened to my son."

Betsy and her husband Jimmy said what happened to their son is a parent's worst nightmare.

"To anyone out there who knows that it may be this person, or a neighbor or a relative, all I can tell you is try to be empathetic to our family.  Paul's siblings are here and going through what we have been through has been unbearable.  I can't even put into words, watching my children come in and look at their brother has just ripped us to shreds," said Jones.

Police said they are looking for a silver or gray car, possibly a four-door Oldsmobile. People who saw the accident were only able to provide a partial vehicle tag number - X64. Police believe the driver may have been an elderly male, based on witness statements, and not realized he had even hit anything.

"If this person thinks that they hit Paul Jones, we want them to come talk to us and let's figure out what happened in this crash," said Coral Gables police spokeswoman Kelly Denham.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
