Historic Ft. Lauderdale Hotel's Future Uncertain

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - Sold to a developer at the end of last year, Broward preservationists are concerned about the fate of a historic Ft. Lauderdale beach hotel.

Opened on New Year's Eve in 1949, the Escape Hotel on RioMar Street is one of a few remaining mid-century modern architectural survivors in the city.

Originally developers had planned to turn the long shuttered hotel into condos and townhomes, but then decided it wasn't financially feasible.  The property was put on the market and on December 23rd, 2010 it was was purchased for $6.25 million by a company called Tiffany House LLC.

The new owners have told city officials they're still discussing what to do with it.

The president of the Broward Trust for Historic Preservation assures she'll be "watching with eagle eyes."
