Hialeah Officer Airlifted To Hospital After Fiery Crash
HIALEAH (CBSMiami) – A Hialeah police motorcycle officer was airlifted to the hospital after being involved in a fiery crash on Palm Avenue.
The accident happened at the intersection of Palm and 43rd Street. When Hialeah Fire units arrived, the officer's motorcycle was engulfed in flames.
Hialeah police said two of the motorcycle officers were northbound on Palm Avenue with their lights and sirens going when an SUV pulled in front of them. One officer was unable to avoid it and 't-boned' the vehicle. On impact he was thrown about 100 feet from his bike.
"He went flying all the way over there to the sidewalk," said Pedro Vasquez who rushed to the officer's aid. "He got banged up. If he's alive, he's lucky. He got messed up."
Chopper4 over the scene spotted the fire damaged bike and a Ford Explorer whose passenger side had a large area of crumpled metal.
The injured officer was wheeled by gurney onto a nearby ball field where he was loaded onto a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue medical rescue helicopter. He was flown to the Ryder Trauma Center, where his injuries were listed as serious.
