Hialeah Man Found Dead After Stand-Off With Police
HIALEAH (CBSMiami) – An elderly Hialeah man took his own life after a stand-off with police which last several hours.
It began Tuesday, around 3:30 p.m., when Everardo Buznego shot a 71-year old school crossing guard working near his home at the intersection of E 7th Avenue and 32nd Street.
"He came out of his house armed with a bb rifle and shot a school crossing guard who worked at the corner of his house, crossing elementary school kids. She'd been working there for years. Apparently he was upset with her for an unknown reason and shot her one time in the buttocks. She called the police and we responded," said Hialeah police spokesman Det. Carl Zogby.
When police went to talk to Buznego, 81, he locked himself in his home and would not answer the door.
Police negotiators spent several hours trying to get Buznego to come out and surrender. When he didn't, police got a warrant for his arrest and sent in a SWAT team to get him.
"We forcibly make our way into the house, he begins to shoot several shots at the police officers who were entering his house. We retreated and regrouped," said Zogby.
When they went into the home for a second time, police found Buznego dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
It is unknown at this time what caused Buznego's irrational behavior. Buznego, who lived alone, had a history of on-going quarrels with neighbors.
