Heisman Trophy Favorite Emerges

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – No player from a Florida school will win the Heisman Memorial Trophy, but a favorite has started to emerge in the last 24 hours.

According to the website Heisman Pundit, the leading contender for the Heisman Trophy is going to be Baylor Bears quarterback Robert Griffin III.

The quarterback has led Baylor to its most successful season in years, 9-3, and has the Bears in a bowl game for a second straight year.

When the games were the biggest, Griffin always came through in the clutch. For the season, Griffin has thrown for 3,998 yards, completed 72.4 percent of his passes, threw 36 touchdowns and just six interceptions on the season.

Griffin threw for better than 300 yards in almost every game. The exceptions were an injury-shortened Texas Tech game, a shortened Iowa State performance, and a blowout victory over Stephen F. Austin.

Griffin's best performance came in a shootout against the Oklahoma Sooners. Griffin threw for 479 yards and four touchdowns, including the game winner with time running out in the fourth quarter.

That performance against the Sooners may be what pushes Griffin over the top.

Behind Griffin, according to Heisman Pundit, is Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, Alabama running back Trent Richardson, Wisconsin running back Montee Ball, and LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu.
