Heat Will Wait To Fill 2 Final Roster Spots
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Now that the Miami Heat have guard Ray Allen and forward Rashard Lewis under contract; the team has two roster spots left that team president Pat Riley said won't be filled immediately.
The Heat is limited in free agency to only being able to offer the veteran minimum salary to any player due to salary cap limitations. Miami has several players trying to make the squad, including three second-round picks from the last three NBA drafts.
"What we do with the last two spots will be determined by the summer league and free agency," Riley said Wednesday.
Riley also said that Heat forward Mike Miller is set to meet with doctors this week to deal with his injured body. Once that meeting is held, Miller and the team will decide what the next step will be for everyone.
If Miller can't play this year due to injury, the Heat will receive roughly $2.9 million in salary cap space to sign a player to replace him, regardless of luxury tax and salary cap rules.
One other note about the Heat's free agency spending on 3-point shooters: According to ESPN.com's Tom Haberstroh, when Miami's Big 3 played with 2 non-PG shooters (like Shane Battier, James Jones, and Mike Miller), they scored 127.4 points per 100 possessions. All other lineups averaged 109.8 points per 100 possessions.
