Hearing To Determine Who Will Take Care Of Abandoned Miami Boy

MIAMI (CBS4) – An emergency shelter hearing will be held to determine who will take temporary custody of a young Miami boy whose mother has not come forward to claim him.

Currently the boy is being looked after by the Department of Children and Families.

Miami Police said Saturday morning an anonymous call led them to an apartment at 642 NW 3rd Street. Inside one of the units they found a little boy left alone with an intoxicated man.

"He was afraid you know," said Detective Maykel Baluja, from the Miami Police missing persons unit. "He didn't know where his mom was so he was basically crying afraid you know trying to seek out where his mom was at."

Detectives said the man told them he had met the boy's mother previously but didn't really know her. He didn't know the mother or child's name. But investigators said he told them the mom had been outside drinking beginning at 10pm Friday night and continued to do so well into the early morning hours. Around four or five in the morning she told the man she had to run out and would be right back. She never returned.

"This kid, I'm sorry, this kid's a beautiful kid," said neighbor Daniel Parrotte. "This shouldn't happen to a little kid like that."

Police said the boy would not say much after they took him in, only telling them that his name was Joshua. They believe he is two to three years old.

Anyone who knows the boy or his mother is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
