Hallandale Beach To Settle Red Light Cameras Suit
HALLANDALE BEACH (CBSMiami) – Drivers ticketed after they were caught on camera blowing through a red light in Hallandale Beach before July 2010 will be getting money back from the city.
On Wednesday, the city's commission will approve a settlement of a class action suit brought by Moraima Ramon which claimed use of the cameras before they were accepted by the state was illegal. About 9,000 drivers will be getting at least a partial refund of their $125 ticket, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.
Hallandale Beach was just one of more than two dozen municipalities throughout the state hit with lawsuits claiming the use of the cameras was illegal before state law allowed it.
Hallandale Beach will pay $332,445.00 toward the settlement while American Traffic Solutions, which operates the camera system, will kick in $43,221.00.
Palm Beach attorney Jason Weisser, who filed the suit against Hallandale Beach, said he's currently in negotiations with 10 other cities including Sweetwater.
In June, Pembroke Pines also settled a similar suit. Suits filed against Miami Gardens, North Miami, Aventura and Bal Harbour have yet to be settled.
