Brush Fire In SW Miami-Dade Contained
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A grass fire which burned near SW 148 street and US-1, is now 100-percent contained, according to the Division of Forestry.
According to forestry, the fire burned 10 acres.
It burned in a protected area of Southwest Miami-Dade called the Rockdale Pineland Preserve, an area filled with native plants and trees, some species of plants are threatened or endangered.
Initially, the Division of Forestry said there were some homes threatened, but they were able to get the fire under control before any homes were damaged and nobody was injured.
People in the area say they were a little concerned.
"I could see the flame above the trees which was bad and then the wind constantly blows," said resident Lonnie Coleman.
"I was very sad for the animals actually we saw a fox run out of the wooded area. We were like that poor fox where's he gonna live. He's been displaced and we're lucky it hasn't come over to our homes. We're right across the street," said resident Isis Massud.
The fire also caused problems at an elementary school nearby.Police had to reroute parents since it was dismissal time.
Forestry said the fire started around 2:00 p.m. It was not a controlled burn.
Some roads were closed and the busway was also shut down for a time, but it has since reopened.
