Strong Storms Hit As Cold Front Arrives
MIAMI (CBS4) -- A line of severe thunderstorms raced across South Florida late Thursday morning, bringing with it much needed rain, but also two tornadoes. The storms passed by early afternoon, but behind them will be a big change in temperatures as the cold front passes over South Florida.
One tornado touched down on Key Biscayne near the Mast Academy. There were no reports of damage from the tornado.
Another tornado touched down at Fort Lauderdale International Airport. Some planes were tossed around due to the twister.
"All of a sudden it was like a tornado," said homeowner Pat Mayers. "I hid under the carport, it was so scary."
As the squall line passed, severe thunderstorm warnings were posted by the National Weather Service for parts of Miami-Dade and Broward counties as the front arrived, bringing high winds, gusty rain, and brief strong lightning.
Behind the front, a blast of cold air will lead to a drastic dip in temperatures Thursday night with coastal areas dropping down to the mid 50s, inland locations will be tumbling to the low 50s. That means Friday morning, temperatures will be about 20 degrees colder in some spots than it was Thursday morning.
Friday afternoon highs will be about 10 degrees cooler in comparison to Thursday afternoon with the low 70s.
Friday night could be even colder with inland lows dropping down into the upper 40s, near the coast it'll be in the low to mid 50s.
Highs will moderate this weekend with the mid 70s on Saturday. Upper 70s on Sunday. Warming back to the 80s early next week.
