Gov. Scott To Make Key West Stop Wednesday
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/NSF) -- Florida Governor Rick Scott hastily added a trip to Key West to his schedule Wednesday, hoping to draw attention to the fact that the city wasn't heavily damaged by Tropical Storm Isaac.
The nation Wednesday is watching pictures of serious damage and dangerous flooding in southern Lousiana, where Isaac is pounding the Gulf coast as a hurricane. But when it crossed Key West it was a tropical storm, and the damage was light.
Scott will stop Wednesday afternoon at the Southernmost Point in the continental U.S., a tourist photo stop in Key West and then head to the Ernest Hemingway House, another tourist attraction on the island.
A statement from the governor's office said Scott "will help promote travel to Florida and let the world know Florida beaches are open for business."
Earlier in the day, Scott activated the state's private relief fund, Neighbors to the Rescue, to help those affected by Isaac, which dumped historic amounts of rain on Palm Beach County.
