Gov. Scott Presents UM With $1M For AIDS Research

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Gov. Rick Scott and Sen. Rene Garcia presented the University of Miami with a check for $1 million for HIV/AIDS research Monday morning.

Scott stopped by the university's Miller School of Medicine to highlight funding in the "It's Your Money Tax Cut Budget" for HIV/AIDS research.

"Funding research to cure the horrible diseases that infect our loved ones must be one of our top priorities, and we must work together to treat these complex diseases which require much more research and development," Scott said in a statement. "We thank the University of Miami for their work as Florida's only nationally designated Center for AIDS Research."

Garcia added, "This 1 million dollar grant will go a long way to help the University of Miami continue their research for better treatment, prevention and more importantly a cure."

Scott's itinerary for the rest of the Monday included visiting his two field offices – one in Hialeah the other in West Palm Beach – and the 47th Annual Governor's Conference on Tourism at the Boca Raton Resort and Club.
