Gov. Scott Names New Secretary Of State
Tallahassee (CBSMiami) – With less than two weeks to go until the Florida primary, Kenneth Detzner has been tapped by Governor Rick Scott to replace outgoing Secretary of State Kurt Browning.
In a statement released Wednesday from the governor's office, Scott said Browning had done the leg work to make sure the January primary goes smoothly.
"Kurt's dedicated service and hard work with Florida's 67 independently elected Supervisors of Elections have prepared our state for the presidential primary later this month," said Scott said. "I am confident that Ken's experience and ability to solve problems will continue our state's record of fair elections for all Floridians."
Detzner is no stranger to Florida politics. He previously served as Chief of Staff for Secretary of State Jim Smith from 2002 to 2003. He was appointed by Governor Jeb Bush to serve as Secretary of State during the Department of State's transition from an independent agency operating under an elected officer of the Florida Cabinet to a Governor's agency.
"I am grateful to Governor Scott for the opportunity to return to the Department of State," Detzner said. "My commitment to transparency and fairness for all will be the hallmark of my service as Secretary of State."
Since 2002, Detzner has been a governmental affairs and management consultant. He has been involved in creating foreclosure and hurricane insurance mediation programs. He also advised the Florida Attorney General's Office on ways to speed up the claims process for businesses that experienced losses resulting from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
