Gov. Scott Kicks Off "Jobs" Tour In Pompano Beach
FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - Governor Rick Scott kicked off his "Jobs for the Next Generation" tour Monday in Pompano Beach.
The two-week statewide tour will highlight the governor's job creation proposals.
Scott will propose permanently ending the sales tax on manufacturing machinery and equipment. Scott said he chose Hoerbiger manufacturing facility because its the kind of company that is the state's future.
"It's a great company. They are growing here. It's a company that is adding equipment and getting rid of the sales tax in the session before last was important to them, but I want to make that permanent," said Scott. "We made it through 2017 and I want to make that permanent so they can make long term plans here."
Hoerbinger, which manufactures gas valves, employess approximately 350 people.
"I come here to this country looking looking for (to fulfill) dreams," said Luis Hernandez. "This company gave me the opportunity to work here and give me training in the machines area. They paid my studies here, I studied machinery."
Co-worker Steve Lopez said working at Hoerbinger is more than just a job.
"It's actually like a career. It's a stable job with good benefits and everything, it's a well paid job," said Lopez.
Lopez said he was thrilled to see Scott come to his work place.
"It means a lot. The company has a good future and we're looking forward to it," said Lopez who got to shake the governor's hand.
Scott also spoke about plans in which the state's best teachers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) would be offered paid summer residencies at private-sector companies.
The governor is also proposing $30 million investment in new workforce training initiatives focused on STEM occupations and incentivizing $10,000 STEM college degrees
