Gov. Scott In Lauderhill Promoting Tax-Free Weekend
LAUDERHILL (CBSMiami) — Gov. Rick Scott visited a Staples stores in Lauderhill on Friday morning to promote the tax-free back-to-school holiday, which ends at midnight on Sunday.
He shopped for school supplies then headed down the street to the Children's Services Council of Broward County to donate the items.
"I encourage parents and families throughout Florida to save money this weekend by shopping for the tax-free school supplies their children need in order to succeed in the classroom," Governor Scott said. "Getting ready for a new school year can be expensive, and getting a tax break will help families stretch their hard-earned dollars."
Back-to-school spending is forecast to be about 20 percent more than last year, with families expected to spend about $688 on average.
There are no overall spending limits. However, tax exemptions are only allowed on approved clothing and shoes under $75 each...with a $15 limit on individual supplies.
Economists estimate the tax break will save Florida families approximately $31.8 million.
