Gov.-Elect Scott Reviving Inaugural Ball Tradition

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) - A new face in Tallahassee is bringing back an old tradition.

Governor-elect Rick Scott will hold an inaugural ball as part of celebrations of his swearing in.

Gov. Charlie Crist abandoned the tradition after taking office in 2007 amid an outcry over holding a highbrow event in a time of economic crisis for the state.

Tickets to the ball are priced at $95 and individual contributions of up to $25,000 can be made. That means the event will be paid for by private donations and won't cost the taxpayers any money. Governors traditionally rely on supporters to pay for their inaugural celebrations.

Other events surrounding Scott's January 4 inauguration are free, including a parade, youth concert, military event honoring Florida military families and more than a dozen other events around the state.

Just as Governor Charlie Crist did, Scott will open the governor's mansion to the public after his swearing in on Tuesday, Jan. 4.

The inaugural team will launch a website within the next few days where contributions and expenditures will be posted.
