GOP Candidates Agree To Univision "Non-Debate"
DORAL (CBSMiami) - In the "No Surprise" department, the political squabble between the Univision network and US Senator Marco Rubio has been sent to the back burner as the GOP Primary approaches, allowing GOP candidates campaigning in Florida to appear on the channel or choice for thousands of Hispanic voters.
Rubio's staff had accused the network of unfairly trying to force Rubio to do an interview by dredging up an old story about his brother-in-law's drug conviction, a charge the network denied. However, many candidates, including Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, and Rick Santorum said they would refuse to debate on Univision, supporting Rubio.
That promise is still being kept, technically. Monday, Romney, Gingrich, and Santorum all agreed to take part in a "Meet the Candidates" forum co-sponsored by Miami Dade College and the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, where they will be interviewed by Univision anchor Jorge Ramos.
However, since they will be interviewed separately, the event is technically not a debate.
Gingrich staffers said the candidate boss agreed to the event after talking it over with Rubio.
