Good 4 You: "Bollywood" For Charity
CORAL GABLES (CBS4) - "A Night in Bollywood" has quickly become the most fun fundraiser in South Florida.
The evening combines the magic of India with the paradise of South Florida. The acts are extraordinary. The Indian mystic is everywhere from the costumes to the entertainment.
CBS4 news was in rehearsals with the fundraisers organizer Matthew Meehan, who CBS4's Jorge Estevez caught up watching over one of the performances by the Century Dance Company.
"I think the most common phrase is oh my god," said Matt Meehan.
Talented and dedicated entertainers, along with other South Florida vendors, were eager to donate their time for the evening on March 24, 2012.
"Everything from tenting companies, staging companies, lighting companies, all the entertainment we have," said Meehan.
India has 80 million orphaned children wandering the streets, homeless and looking for food.
"Everyone that has ever visited, we all come back and help not only the kids we have, but we want to keep growing," said Meehan.
Matthew and a group of others helped grow Sunil's Home Orphanage in India. Six years ago they had 2 orphans and now they have 90.
"We provide them food shelter and an education. Most importantly, an education so they can break that cycle of poverty," said Meehan.
The children at Sunils Home Orphanage play games they never knew, get the education they only dreamed of, and go about each day with a chance at a better life. Among those helping are the 15 -hundred people who raise money during "A Night in Bollywood" in Coral Gables.
"We have a fantastic community here in Miami that really supports a great cause," said Meehan.
"They are honored, honored to be a part of it and it is a good cause," said Bettina Sliva of the New Century Dance Company.
The company normally gets hired for thousands, but for one night their payment will know they are reaching out to children who need them the most.
