Play Resumes At Cadillac Championship
DORAL (CBSMiami) – Play has resumed at the Cadillac Championship after heavy thunderstorms roared through the area Thursday afternoon.
The first golfers went off the tee Thursday morning, but the weather started to deteriorate a little after 2 p.m. and play was suspended before a line of thunderstorms reached the area.
Golfers returned to the course at 4:45 p.m. and will likely have to play two rounds on Friday to get caught up with the normal four-day PGA schedule.
When play was suspended, Jason Dufner was leading the field at 5 under par through 10 holes. He was just ahead of Russell Henley who was at 4 under par through 10 holes. Luke Donald and Patrick Reed were tied for third at three under par.
The scores may not have been any higher as all of the golfers were looking for a new approach to the new look course.
Since Donald Trump bought the club and course, he has had the Blue Monster course completely redesigned. According to the PGA Tour, the course has undergone the following changes:
- Rebuilt and reshaped all the greens
- Rebuilt and repositioned all the bunkers
- Rebuilt all the tees
- Rebuilt all the fairways
Most fans were focused on Tiger Woods and his lower back. Tiger withdrew last weekend from the Honda Classic due to a lower back injury. Tiger said he underwent treatment every day this week and he teed off just after 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
Woods made it through six holes and was at +1 when play was suspended Thursday afternoon.
Woods said that his back injury was different from injuries in the past. He famously won the 2008 U.S. Open while playing with two stress fractures and a torn ACL. Tiger said it was easier because the pain didn't hit until after the shot was away. But with the back everything can be restricted.
With the course completely redesigned, a lot of rain may further complicate how players deal with the course on Friday. The weather should clear up to a picture perfect golfing weekend by Saturday and Sunday.
