Gingrich Garnering Support With South Florida Stop
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Republican Presidential Candidate Newt Gingrich was at a private fundraiser Thursday night at the Biltmore in Coral Gables.
In an interview with Miami Herald Political Reporter Marc Caputo, Gingrich says he's done nothing wrong challenging Mitt Romney's business history at Bain Capital.
"He said, I've created 100,000 jobs. Well has he? He gets to assert it, nobody gets to ask about it, and we're supposed to trust him. This sounds a lot like Obama's stimulus package," said Gingrich.
Caputo says it's a risky discussion.
"This is kind of like playing dynamite with Newt Gingrich. Either it blows up on him or it blows up on Mitt Romney. And we're going to see who winds up getting exploded first," said Caputo.
Here in Miami, Gingrich is focusing on Cuba.
"We have tolerated this dictatorship for a very long time," said Gingrich.
Gingrich says he wants to spark an anti-Castro uprising within Cuba -- what he calls a Cuban Spring.
"With all due respect to other countries in the region, no people have suffered such direct totalitarian imprisonment, such repression, and such threats to their very freedoms than the people of Cuba," said Gingrich.
Gingrich is confident about next week's primary in South Carolina.
"In fact, he says he's going to win South Carolina. And he needs to win Florida," said Caputo.
Gingrich thinks Romney will lose.
"Now he doesn't want to talk about his role as a Massachusetts governor because it's too liberal, and he knows that in South Carolina and Florida, they're not going to vote for a Massachusetts moderate," said Gingrich.
Gingrich's next campaign stop is Friday morning at Versailles Cuban Restaurant in Little Havana.
