Germany's Lufthansa Cancels Flights Due To Pilot Strike
BERLIN (CBSMiami) – More than 400,000 passengers flying Germany's Lufthansa will encounter cancellations due to a three-day strike by pilots.
According to CBS4 news partner, The Miami Herald, 3,800 flights will be cancelled.
The cancellations include domestic and intercontinental connections Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the airline said Monday.
"A strike of three consecutive days would be one of the biggest walkouts in Lufthansa's history," the company wrote in a statement.
Lufthansa flies to and from Miami International Airport, but there is no word on local cancellations.
According to a union representing pilots at Lufthansa the strike is over a long-running pay dispute. Among other issues, the Vereinigung Cockpit union said Lufthansa had failed to make a "negotiable offer" during two years of pay negotiations.
Though the strike starts Wednesday, some Tuesday flights have been canceled for logistical reasons.
Passengers are being informed about the cancellations by text messages and emails, Lufthansa said.
Lufthansa said the strike would cost the airline tens of millions of euros.
