George Zimmerman Headed Back To Jail
SANFORD (CBSMiami) – George Zimmerman, who stands accused of killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, will have to report to jail in the next 48 hours after Judge Kenneth Luster revoked his bail.
Prosecutors in the George Zimmerman case had asked the judge to revoke his bond in a motion filed Friday. Prosecutors said Zimmerman lied about his finances when testifying during a bail hearing.
Zimmerman claimed his family had limited funds during the bail hearing earlier this year. As a result, Zimmerman posted bond of $150,000 and was released from jail.
Defense attorney Mark O'Mara said several days after the hearing that he discovered his client had raised more than $200,000 from a website, which was revealed at the bond hearing.
"You know, I understand his frustration because the way it happened at the bond hearing," O'Mara said after Friday's hearing. "I do think that the Zimmerman family was acting with constraints they thought they had...And you know the revocation of bond I hope is temporary."
O'Mara continued, "I hope that they will give us a day in court to explain George's behavior and look at all the circumstances, even the discovery that's come out today in determining what he's gonna do about letting him back out on bond."
Attorney Benjamin Crump, who is representing the Martin family said the ruling went to the heart of the case, which is Zimmerman's credibility.
"We think what just transpired in the court room was very very important. It was at the crux of the matter in this whole case. Judge Lester finding that George Zimmerman was dishonest. Because his credibillity is the most important thing in this entire case," Martin said.
"Remember it was only George Zimmerman's testimony that says Trayvon attacked him. All the other objective evidence suggests that George Zimmerman pursued and confronted Trayvon Martin," Crump continued. "Therefore that's why this is such an important ruling today. The credibilty is the issues And we think it is the most important issue so far in this entire case. "
Zimmerman pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. The case has drawn national attention after Zimmerman told police he shot Martin in self-defense. Prosecutors say the shooting was not justified under the stand your ground law and was instead a murder.
