Gay Rights Activists Gather For "Kiss Day" At Pompano Chick-Fil-A
POMPANO BEACH (CBS4) - South Florida puckered up to support gay marriage Friday night.
From lip-locks, to smooches, to pecks on the cheek, kisses flowed freely in front of the Pompano Beach Chick-Fil-A restaurant.
Many of those kissing were same-sex couples. The "kiss-in" was part of a nationwide protest against comments by the national chain's president that he supports "traditional marriage".
Victoria Michaels explained her theory, "If you're against gay marriage just don't marry a gay person."
Sydney Karp agreed, "I think Chick-Fil-A has a right to say whatever it wants and not infringe on anyone's beliefs or rights. I'm not here to say they're wrong I just believe everyone's here to love each other and coexist."
Many drivers honked their support, but some disagreed with the demonstrators. One man who didn't want to be identified called the whole thing "ridiculous" and said it was a freedom of speech issue, but many of the Pompano demonstrators argue it's more than that. They say they're angry that Chick-Fil-A has donated to groups they consider "anti gay rights."
"Say what you want Mr. President (of Chick-Fil-A) it's a great thing, but what you do with your money we're here to stop you," Reverend Jamie Grace said,"
Wednesday, people across the country showed their support for Chick-Fil-A packing restaurants for Chick-Fil-A Appreciation day.
After demonstrators left, Pompano resident Joseph Fitzpatrick and his wife kissed in front of the Chick-Fil-A sign to show an opposing viewpoint.
"My family values of [marriage between] a man and a woman absolutely should be shared," said Fitzpatrick.
