Gators Have A Pulse In SEC East
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (CBSMiami.com) – The once mighty Florida Gators team has fallen into disarray after three straight SEC losses.
Still, even with a 2-3 record, the Gators are not completely out of the race for the SEC East championship. Of course that tells you all you need to know about the state of football in the SEC East.
In the SEC East, Kentucky and Tennessee are 0-3 and Vanderbilt is 1-3. At the top of the division is South Carolina and Georgia with both squads being 4-1.
All of that brings you back to the Gators who are off this weekend. The Gators will return to the field against Georgia on October 29 in the World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.
If the Gators lose to the Dawgs, then any hopes of playing for the SEC Championship are over. Also, as the Palm Beach Post pointed out, even if Florida beats Georgia, South Carolina and Vanderbilt; if South Carolina and Georgia won the rest of their conference games, the Gators are out.
Confused? Well, to put it another way, Florida's chances of playing for the SEC Championship are rapidly approaching slim and none.
But, the Gators could get a reprieve because South Carolina lost its top running back, Marcus Lattimore, for the rest of the season. Georgia has three games left against Florida, Auburn and Kentucky and should be favored in all of them.
Florida is hoping that starting quarterback John Brantley can return by the Georgia game after missing the last two games. The Gators offense was non-existent against LSU, Alabama, and Auburn.
Disappearing against LSU and Alabama is expected, but Auburn has one of the worst defenses in the country and still, the Gators couldn't manage to score despite a stellar defensive performance.
Florida has to win out and get a little help to get into the SEC Championship game. Still, getting to the championship game means having to play Alabama or LSU again; so it's not exactly a prescription for getting to the BCS.
