CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami) – A man who reportedly ran over and killed a hotel employee outside the Courtyard by Marriott in Coral Gables over the weekend was denied bond by a judge on Monday.
Edward William Reid, 40, is accused of hitting Eladio Rodriguez, 62, who tried to stop him from stealing a company van outside the hotel.
In court Monday a prosecutor said Rodriquez suffered a gruesome end.
"The defendant hit the victim and continued to drive the car while the victim was still lodged beneath the vehicle," the assistant state attorney said.
Rodriguez was rushed to the hospital but did not survive his injuries. He was a husband and father of three, his youngest son is 19 years old. Rodriguez
was married for 20 years to his wife and were saving to buy a home.
Three hotel guests who were in the van waiting to be taken to the airport when it was stolen, managed to escape a short distance away when the van stopped for a moment to make a turn. None of the tourists, visitors from England, were hurt.
Reid ran from the van in Miami after hitting a car at Flagler and 8th Avenue. The driver of that car chased him down on foot.
"When I was sure he wasn't armed, I decided to run him down, because it was clear he was trying to get away," the man said.
According to a police report, Reid is homeless and has a history of prior arrests for carrying a concealed weapon, aggravated battery and auto theft.
Reid faces numerous charges including 1st-degree murder, carjacking and three counts of kidnapping.
