Gables Cop Accused Of Roughing Up Hotel Worker

MIAMI (CBS4) - A Coral Gables police officer has found himself on the wrong side of the law after he reportedly got violent with a hotel employee in Marathon.

According to an arrest warrant, police lieutenant Edward Claughton was staying at the Tranquility Bay Hotel last month when he got into a dispute with the employee on October 10th. According to the warrant the employee, who said he had been sarcastic with Claughton, had gone home when Claughton allegedly call him back to the hotel saying he had forgotten to tip him.

When the employee arrived, Claughton reportedly shoved, punched and threatened him.

The Coral Gables Police Department said Claughton has been relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

When taken into custody, Claughton will be charged with battery, a first degree misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of a year in jail and/or a thousand dollar fine.
