Furloughed by the Feds? Might As Well Golf !
DAVIE (CBSMiami) – South Florida federal employees furloughed due to the ongoing government shutdown can tee off at a local golf club at a discount.
The Davie Golf and Country Club is offering furloughed federal employees half-price golf rates as long as the partial government shutdown continues.
Fulltime and part-time federal employees who have been furloughed can get the special rates by showing a current federal employee ID and stating their furlough date. The discounted deal is valid weekdays only.
"There are thousands of laid-off federal employees in South Florida, sitting home with no pay", said Dave Harris, Director of Marketing at Davie Golf, "So we decided to do something to show our support for them. Hopefully a relaxing game of golf will help our federal employees get through this difficult time".
The amount of the 50-percent discount will vary depending on the time of day in which the golfer plays, but will be an average savings of about $15.00.
"We all hope this is a short-term offer and our government employees can get back to work soon", Harris added.
Tee time reservations should be made in advance.
More than 800,000 federal workers were sent home without pay when the shutdown began on Tuesday October 1st amid a budget stalemate in Congress.
The Davie Golf and Country Club isn't the only business giving discounted deals or freebies for furloughed workers.
TD Bank is offering special assistance for its clients who were furloughed by the government shutdown.
Hyundai is letting furloughed workers defer their car payments and other companies are trying to help out, too.
AMC theaters is offering free small popcorns to those employed by the government, regardless of whether a movie ticket is also purchased. Instead, the individual needs to simply present a valid government or military-issued ID at a concession stand. If they're particularly hungry, they can apply the discount offer to a larger size.
Menchies Frozen Yogurt is also giving government workers 20 percent off orders of yogurt.
