Ft. Lauderdale Road Re-Opens After Sinkhole

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) – One day after a broken sewer line caused a section of a street to collapse near Broward General Medical Center, Ft. Lauderdale utility workers are scrambling to repair a second sewer line break which pumped sewage into the Middle New River.

The county's health department has issued advisories for the neighborhoods of Tarpon River and Middle New River.

The area affected in Tarpon River is between SW 11th Court and SW 12th Street and from SW 2nd Avenue to SW 8th Avenue.

The area affected in Middle New River is from NE 18th Street to NE 22nd Street and from NE 22nd Terrace to Middle River Drive.

People should avoid use of this area's recreational waters for fishing, swimming or jet skiing.

The first sign of trouble appeared Tuesday morning when a 12 inch sewer line broke in the 300 block of SW 17th Street around 11 a.m. The gushing water created a sinkhole which led to the collapse of a section of the road. City workers repaired the break, drained the water and temporarily repaired the road.  It was re-opened to traffic at 11 p.m.

Shortly after this break, the public works department received a call about sewage backing up in the 1400 block of Southwest Ninth Avenue, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

A short time later another break, this one underwater, was reported in 2300 block of Northeast 19th Street, off the Middle New River, according to the paper. Workers were able to shutdown the line and a dive crew is expected to repair the pipe on Wednesday.
