Ft. Lauderdale Gets OK For Six More Red-Light Cameras
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – Drivers have six more reasons to hit the brakes for that upcoming yellow light.
Six more intersections will get red-light cameras. City commissioners approved the measure on Tuesday, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.
Plans for placing them at Northeast 23rd and 30th streets, which are State Road A1A intersections, were scrapped, however.
Mayor Jack Seiler asked that the two beach intersections not be monitored because he did not consider them major intersections in need of coverage.
Fort Lauderdale will have 23 intersections with red-light cameras once the six new ones are activated.
The additional red-light cameras were approved as part of a new contract with American Traffic Solutions that will last until May 2016.
The company will receive $4,250 a month for each of the 38 intersection approaches its cameras will cover. The city dropped plans to pay the company a per-citation fee because of concerns about the legality of the proposed fee.
