No Bond For Man Accused Of Stabbing Elderly Father To Death
DAVIE (CBSMiami) – A Fort Lauderdale man has been denied bond on murder charges after he allegedly stabbed his elderly father to death. In addition, bond was revoked on a prior charge of a battery of a person who was 65 years of age or older.
Douglas Scott, 51, was arrested Monday evening outside his father's home on the 1000 block of SE 4th Street in Fort Lauderdale.
According to the probable cause affidavit, "Witnesses described hearing screaming outside a multi-dwelling apartment complex. Witnesses came out and observed Douglas engaged with his father. One witness intervened by wrestling with the arrestee. As he was doing so, the victim yelled out, 'He's got a knife'."
When police arrived at the home, "they encountered a witness actively attempting to restrain Douglas",, according to the affidavit.
Norman Scott, the 80-year-old victim, has been stabbed multiple times in the chest and back.
His wife, said the report, identified the knife as having come from inside the home.
Joan Scott, Douglas' mother and wife of the victim, told CBS4 News that her son suffered from mental illness for many years.
Her husband was the founder of the Consulting Engineers Group with offices in Fort Lauderdale, Texas, Illinois and New Mexico.
Tom D'Arcy was a lifelong friend and colleague of Norman Scott.
Speaking from his home in Texas he tells CBS4's Joan Murray that Norman Scott was a 'salt of the earth' type of man and a 'real leader' who pioneered the use of Precast concrete.
He said Scott was president of the American Concrete Institute of technology, the group that writes the building codes in the U.S.
Scott grew up in Nebraska and pursued a civil engineering degree at the University of Nebraska. After being called up by the Air Force he was stationed at an air base in Palm Beach where he met and married his wife, Joan.
Scott took a job with a construction company involved in the precast concrete industry in Ft. Lauderdale. A few years later he became the head of a the precast concrete company known as PCI and moved to its new headquarters in Chicago.
In the 1960's he opened The Construction Engineers Group.
According to D'Arcy, Norman Scott was involved in the design aspects of numerous stadiums the NFL uses today including the Sundome in St. Petersburg Florida and the Jaguars stadium in Jacksonville.
Having retired, Norm Scott continued as a consultant for The Consulting Engineers Group and PCI.
D'Arcy says Douglas Scott was diagnosed bi-polar and had violent episodes. He had been in and out of treatment and calls what happened, 'dreadful.'
