FSU's Winston Named ACC Player Of The Year
TALLAHASEE (CBSMiami) – Florida State Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston has been setting records since high school, but his latest accomplishment may be the best…at least for a few weeks.
The Atlantic Coast Conference's writers named Winston as the ACC Player of the Year. Winston, who is the first underclassman in the conference's 61-year history to win the award, received 47 of a possible 65 votes.
Winston beat out Boston College running back Andre Williams, Pittsburgh's Aaron Donald, and Clemson's Tajh Boyd.
The FSU redshirt freshman quarterback was also named the ACC Offensive Player of the Year award Wednesday. He had previously been selected as the conference's rookie of the year and offensive rookie of the year.
Winston has led the FSU offense to unprecedented heights in school history. He has the Noles just 73 points of setting the NCAA record for most points scored in a season. The Alabama native has thrown for 3,490 yards and an FSU record 35 touchdowns.
With two more touchdown passes this year, Winston will break the NCAA record for touchdown passes by a freshman, currently held by St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford. In addition, Winston can set the NCAA record for passing yards by a freshman by throwing for 252 more yards.
Jameis is also a finalist for the Maxwell, Davey O'Brien, and Manning awards and is considered the leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy.
The Noles play in the ACC Championship Game on Saturday and with a victory over Duke can clinch a spot in the Bowl Championship Series National Championship Game in January.
