FSU Ranked #2 In Initial BCS Rankings
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – After another wild weekend of upsets across the college football world, the first Bowl Championship Series standings for 2013 was released Sunday night and the team at the top was once again the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Alabama was a near unanimous number one after they completely dismantled and demolished the Arkansas Razorbacks to remain undefeated in 2013. Alabama was number one by a large margin in the USA Today coaches' poll and the Harris poll and number two in the computer rankings.
Right on Alabama's heels is the Florida State Seminoles who left little doubt that it is the cream of the crop in the Atlantic Coast Conference. FSU is number one in the computer rankings and third in each of the other polls.
FSU mauled Clemson on Saturday in a game that was over as soon as the then-third ranked Tigers stepped off the bus. FSU started the game with a fumble recovery and a quick touchdown and never looked back in the 51-14 stomping of the Tigers.
The race to get to the final BCS national championship game has a few other contenders including: number three Oregon, number four Ohio State, and number five Missouri. Out of the three, Missouri has the most direct route to Pasadena.
If the Tigers win out in the regular season and beat Alabama in the SEC Championship game, they will claim one of the spots in the title game. But that's a long way from happening as the Tigers still have South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas A&M on the schedule before a matchup with Alabama.
Ohio State could be left on the outside looking in. If Alabama wins out, they get a spot in the title game again. If FSU wins out, they will likely claim the other spot. If FSU is tripped up along the way and Oregon wins out, the Ducks go to Pasadena.
Then there are a few other teams like the Miami Hurricanes who could play a big spoiler if they beat FSU in Tallahassee in a few weeks.
Remember, in the 15-year history of the BCS, the team that debuted at number one in the initial standings has played in the championship game eight times. Further, of the 30 teams that played for the BCS title, half debuted at number one or number two in the initial BCS rankings.
