Friday's Rain Forces Some Residents Out Of Their Home
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Friday's flooding rains, which affected many neighborhoods throughout South Florida, left some residents with a soggy mess Saturday.
"I'm really devastated. I've been crying all morning because we've lost everything even the truck that my husband works with its total loss," said Anna Aguilar, her North Miami residence was flooded Friday.
Aguilar's home has several inches of water; her front lawn looked more like a canal.
Friday's downpour caused such flooding that Aguilar and her husband had to climb through the window of their home to get out.
"We've lost all our furniture computers you name it we've lost," said Aguilar.
They are among dozens of families who had to evacuate on northeast 144th Street and 12th Avenue.
As a safety precaution, power was shut off in the neighborhood.
"Red Cross took us to a hotel. We'll be there next three days.They gave us little money for food and clothing," said Aguilar.
Conditions were similar on Northwest 15th Drive and 147TH Street. People spent their Saturday cleaning up from Friday's rains.
"I thought it was gonna be a little amount of water coming in, all of a sudden it was 20-inches of water coming into my house last night and it destroyed everything I have," said Shelena Brown, her home flooded.
Residents are frustrated that the water has yet to recede—making cleanup next to impossible.
"Water is still out there not going down. It's a nice sunny day and this water still out here," said Brown adding, "Every car that comes by is just dragging water straight into the house."
The Red Cross has opened a shelter, located in the American Legion Building at 6445 NE 7th Avenue, for anybody in South Florida affected by the floods.
