Freshman Sam Bruce Out Indefinitely With Non-Football Injury
CBS Miami: The injury bug has sunken its teeth into the University of Miami roster again.
Miami announced Friday morning that freshman wide receiver Sam Bruce sustained a "non-football related injury" to his lower extremity and will be out indefinitely.
Bruce, who was already serving a three-game suspension stemming from an incident that occurred during his senior year in high school, is still being evaluated by UM's team doctors to determine the extent of the injury – but it looks as though he'll miss more than three games due to suspension.
A 5-foot-8, quick-footed pass-catcher and former four-star recruit, Bruce was expected to contribute to a relatively thin receiver corps this season. But this injury, which some are speculating could sideline Bruce for most of - if not the whole - season could take him totally out of the equation and make him take a medical redshirt for the 2016 season.
Hurricanes head coach Mark Richt recently commented on Bruce's performance during the teams' practices.
"He's been great. He's a great practice player," Richt said. "Works hard…brings a lot of energy. He's not getting as many reps as the other guys – so he's fresher. But when he gets his reps, he's going full speed. He looks like a player."
Cornerback Colbert Out vs. FAU
Miami also announced late Thursday that redshirt senior cornerback Adrian Colbert will miss this Saturday's game against FAU with a knee injury that he sustained in Wednesday's practice.
According to reports by The Palm Beach Post, Colbert – a former safety who transferred to UM from Texas – underwent a minor surgery Wednesday and the injury was "not as bad as originally thought" and that Colbert could return to action sooner opposed to later.
Still, he won't be available to go against the Owls.
Sophomore Sheldrick Redwine will start in Colbert's place. And sophomore Michael Jackson and freshman Malek Young will be the top reserves at cornerback this Saturday.
