Frequent Cuban Hunger Striker Comes To Miami
MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — With Cuban Independence Day just around the corner, a frequent Cuban hunger strike traveled to Miami for the holiday.
Guillermo Farinas arrived Sunday.
Farinas is a Cuban government opponent who believed that he received unfair treatment from the Cuban government. According to Farinas, on previous attempts to leave the island he was told if he do so, he would be unable to return.
In January, Cuba passed a new law which ended the country's exit visa requirement. Under the law, Farinas would be allowed to leave and return without the threat of exile.
Berta Soler, the co-founder of Cuban opposition group Ladies in White, is scheduled to arrive in Miami on Monday. She will be joined by Cuban-born singer Gloria Estefan.
Farinas and Soler have both been awarded Europe's top human rights prize.
